One question we're sometimes asked is if you can bolt Armco barriers to tarmac. As such, we want to provide our opinion on the subject here. Like with many things, there is a possibility you could take this route. Yet, it might not be the safest option. A top priority for us has always been the safety of pedestrians and drivers. So, we make our barrier products offer maximum protection to whoever and whatever is in harm's way. This commitment to safety includes how we install barriers.

When you are aiming to install Armco barriers, you need them to be as long lasting, hard wearing, and sturdy as possible. So, when people ask whether they should bolt their barriers to tarmac, our recommendation is usually no.

Tarmac's weak nature

It is true that tarmac can be more aesthetically pleasing than concrete. Saying this, it is not the ideal choice when you must bolt into the ground. It has a weak nature, allowing it to tear up and wear relatively easily. Furthermore, its weakness will increase during hot weather.

You will want to be certain that your safety barrier will be as sturdy as possible. It may need to resist multiple heavy impacts. Also, when we are referring to the impact a heavy, high speed vehicle can make, your barrier will need solid grounding. It can be hard to achieve this with tarmac.

When installing Armco barriers, it is recommended that you bolt into concrete. If you have to deal with a site that has tarmac, you should dig down into the ground. Next, fill the hole with concrete, leave a gap that is a couple of inches at the top, and cover with tarmac after it sets. You are free to set the bolts into your concrete when it's wet. Or, you can use thunder bolts if it has dried. This way, with a strong base, you will know you have the best fixing and solidity underground.
