Look at all the different handrail styles

One of the best things about having to install a handrail in a property is you have so many options. You can choose a style that works for you. It could prioritise safety and stability above all else. Or it can be a simpler option to offer support but also enhance the aesthetics. You will be able to accommodate any needs with different handrails and railing styles.

The first thing to look at is the basic handrail. There are three broad categories here.

Integrated

This is one of the most popular options. It is a complete design that incorporates a number of different elements into one unit. For example there will be a rail, spindles, and can even be newel posts. People often choose this option where there is no wall accompanying the stair because it is self supporting. It can create a grand look too.

Wall mount

This second option is only viable if there is a wall beside the stair. Here you can mount the handrail directly to that surface. In some cases you can drill directly into the wall to bolt the rail in place. In others you need to use brackets. One thing these handrails have in common though is they tend to be a single unit, whether it is a tube, a wooden beam, or something else.

Guardrail

Some handrails are mounted to guardrails. The goal here is to provide more stability to the whole structure. While the rails are functional, it is not the main focus.

Styles for the rails

You get even more choice when you start looking at the different options for the railings. They include:

Picket

This is one of the classic handrail designs. It features vertical bars along a base rail. They can be metal or wood, and range in shape and thickness to give you lots of choice.

Multi-line

Here is a similar design to picket but flipped on its side so the bars are horizontal. Again wood and metal are the most common options and you also have a lot of choice in terms of style. However, you need to be careful because the arrangement can tempt children to climb. That can be a serious safety hazard.

Cable

A slight change on the multi-line style is cable. The cables are thinner than bars or rods, even the thinnest ones. As a result, it can provide a really good look. Most impressive is the fact that the cables don't block much of the view.

Wire mesh

Another option is to infill with wire mesh or a lattice. It isn't the most popular look for homes, but can be really common for industrial sites and external locations. The structure tends to have the most strength too, so if that is the priority it is a great choice.

Panel

Some people want to ditch the traditional style altogether and go for something more modern. Panel railings can be fantastic here, whether you choose glass or metal. The latter are excellent when strength is really important.
