Don’t confuse a handrail for a guardrail

Whether you need a handrail, a crash barrier, or traffic control measures, we will make sure you find the most suitable items.

Every year, many people suffer injuries due to falls, trips, and slips on stairways. Handrails offer the stability and support they need when climbing down or up stairs. They give everyone a third contact point, something that is critical for older people. One problem with handrails however, is that people often mistake them for guardrails. These two entities are not the same though. Therefore, we feel that it is necessary to point out the distinctions between them.

Guardrails stop people falling off stairs

In many instances, people use the terms guardrails and handrails interchangeably. They should not be doing this though. A guardrail, sometimes called a railing, is installed to stop anyone from falling off stairways. This is instead of stopping them from falling down one. Something else a guardrail can do is function as a barrier for a balcony, deck, or porch. People won't fall off the edge with one in place.

Usually, guardrails on stairs operate as makeshift handrails. They have an indentation for a pinch grip. Here, the fingers are doing the majority of the work. This grip is not as secure as a power grip. It does not offer you the amount of fall prevention and safety that proper handrails do. True rails are made with the focus being fall prevention. They make hallways, walkways, and stairs safer for everyone.
